How do I implement a multi-genre research project in my own classroom?

  • Create an example of a Multi-Genre Research Project that you have created on something in your curriculum or just something you are interested in!

  • This would be a great opportunity for grade level teachers to get together and decide upon a set of genres you want to have your students do and then each create a certain number of examples.

  • Let your students know what you expect of them by not just telling them, but showing them your examples.

  • Make sure you have created a rubric and let the students know what they will be graded on and how they can achieve high scores on the rubric.

  • Have a list of topics you want your students to study. It can include anything from your curriculum that you would like your students to do research on.

  • If you would like to, this is a chance for you to allow your students to make a choice in what they want to do their projects on and what genres they want to do. Imagine the participation and excitement your students will have when they get to choose what they are going to be doing for their research!

  • Depending upon how you would like to do this report, you can either have students complete this project individually or in groups.

  • Once either you or your students have chosen what their topic will be, then you can discuss the different genres with them and have them decide upon what type of genres they are interested in.

  • Students should be given opportunities to complete research using different research methods on their topic.

  • This project provides a great opportunity for students to learn to begin to cite sources and develop great research strategies.

  • Once students have completed their projects, they should share them with the class to help them do presentations and teach the other students about their topic!
